Origin
Rolled oats, also known as oat flakes or oatmeal, are derived from the common oat plant (Avena sativa). Oats are believed to have originated in the Fertile Crescent region of the Middle East around 2,000 BCE. They were cultivated by ancient civilizations such as the Egyptians and Greeks. Oats were later introduced to other parts of Europe, including Scotland, where they became a staple crop. Today, rolled oats are widely produced and consumed worldwide, with major producers including the United States, Canada, Russia, and Australia.
