Thoroughly wash the Swiss chard leaves under cold running water to remove any dirt or grit.
Remove the stems from the Swiss chard and chop the leaves into bite-sized pieces. Keep the stems to chop them finely as they will also be used.
In a large pan, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add the minced garlic and chopped Swiss chard stems. Sauté for about 2 minutes until the garlic is fragrant and the stems start to soften.
Add the chopped Swiss chard leaves to the pan. Season with salt, black pepper, and red pepper flakes if using. Cook for about 3 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the leaves are wilted and tender.
Remove the pan from heat. Squeeze fresh lemon juice over the cooked Swiss chard. Stir well to combine all the flavors.
