Finely chop the onion and garlic cloves.
Finely chop the carrot and celery stalk.
Heat the olive oil in a large pan over medium heat.
Add the chopped vegetables to the pan and sauté until soft.
Add the chopped tomatoes, oregano, sugar, salt, and pepper to the pan. Simmer gently for 20 minutes, stirring occasionally.
Tear fresh basil leaves and stir into the sauce just before serving.
